The Day After

After a haphazard sleep, we spent the morning in the apartment. Breakfast was scrambled eggs with mushrooms and cheese. It was a bit of a treasure hunt going through the various cupboards trying to find things. I wish I had thought to buy black pepper. There was a lot of salt, but only a little pepper. I didn't find any other recognizable seasonings. The kitchen is tiny with the fridge in the hall across from the toilet. We just counted this as part of the adventure. We were here to get our kiddos and not worry too much about the rest.

In the afternoon, our Advocate took us on a tour of St. Michael's cathedral, St. Sofia's cathedral (though she wasn't really a saint), and along the main street which is closed on weekends for pedestrians. There is so much rich history here and the people are very proud of it. We were glad to learn some of it. From there we went home. On a side note: I was struck by the fact that there are no public bathrooms for use...so different from home. For our tour, we walked a lot and stood a lot. In Kiev, it seems that benches or seating in cathedrals don't really exist.

There is not much in the way of entertainment in Kiev. Everything is spread out. While talking in the van, we were told that a decent hotel runs about $200 a night and you would still have to drive to get anywhere.

Speaking of driving... This is an adventure all in itself. Lane lines seem to be only suggestions for drivers. There is are many, many cars and many, many pedestrians, making for some interesting situations. This, of course is norm for them, but for me it was a bit hairy... and seat belts are optional as well.

After our mini tour, we headed back to the apartment and were on our own until the next day. We spent the time calling home, cooking dinner, a walk, some TV (in Ukrainian, of course) and sleep.

Tomorrow we go to the SDA for our interview.
